I am mostly known for my original characters like Eemo Cloud, Draffi, Lleafi, Knotanxi, Kattessy, Trisheepi, Oxenlox and my unicorn that started it all! I’m always adding new characters when inspiration hits, usually drawing from my real world experiences & thoughts.
I’m a UK toy designer and illustrator based in Singapore, with quite an eclectic art background. I actually loved fantasy and pop culture art as a teenager, and I knew I wanted to be an artist from a young age. Sadly, in school I was told that if I wanted to be taken seriously as an artist, I should stop doing fantasy art immediately, because it wasn’t “real” art. So I ended up trying photography, contemporary art, design, and community projects, none of which really fit. It took me over a decade to understand how wrong and damaging that snobbery was. I finally rekindled my teen love for illustration and it brings me great joy that creature design is now at the heart of my practice. It was validating that I was shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards 2018 (experimental category) for a creature illustration, and in the same year received an honourable mention in the Dark Crystal Age of Resistance creature design competition.
Designer toys started more as a curiosity, having seen the amazing work of some booth neighbours at a con. They told me they made the pieces themselves, by resin casting, which blew my mind. I didn’t realise that people could make their own. Straight after the con I bought casting materials and my first attempt was a complete failure, but it lit a creative flame in me.
Even though I went full time toys in 2018, I consider designer toys as an extension of my illustration process. I am still discovering a lot about my creativity even though I’ve been a practicing artist since 2006. I am really excited to see where toys will take me. But more than that I am excited to see how designer toys are shaping the creative landscape and attitudes towards pop culture.
